چکیده

The need for a temporary substitute for renal function has been emphasized recently by the report from battle fronts of a high incidence of fatal uremia in the severely wounded following kidney shutdown in the post-operative and post-transfusion period. It is probable that the acute renal damage of wounded men and in some other conditions is reversible, so that death from uremia might be prevented if retention products could be excreted through an extra-renal outlet during the healing period. Three ways of decreasing uremia by extrarenal excretion have been suggested in the past: (1) excretion through the intestinal tract, by gastro-duodenal suction and the production of diarrhea, and through the skin by the production of sweating; (2) "vivi-difusion," by which the circulating blood is submitted to dialysis outside the body and returned to the circulation (1 to 3); (3) peritoneal dialysis, by which fluid, introduced into the peritoneal cavity and allowed to equilibrate with the blood, is afterward removed with nitrogenous and. other diffusible substances (4 to 6). The peritoneum is an efficient dialyzing membrane (7), but utilization of this function for the treatment of uremia (4, 6, 8) to date has not been applied with success.2 To determine whether this method can be made practical for clinical use, studies have been made on man and animals. This report deals with the experimental data in dogs.

The serum levels of MMP-9, MMP-2 and vWF in patients with low doses of urokinase peritoneal dialysis decreased uremia complicated with cerebral infarction.

To investigate the effect of MMP-9, MMP-2 and vWF in patients with low doses of urokinase peritoneal dialysis decreased uremia complicated with cerebral infarction. 112 cases of uremia complicated with cerebral infarction were randomly divided into the peritoneal dialysate with urokinase treatment group (66 cases) and the conventional treatment group (46 cases). At the same time, 50 cases of he...

Impact of low-dose urokinase in peritoneal dialysis on serum oxidative stress, nitric oxide and endothelin in cerebral infarction complicated with uremia.

BACKGROUND Cerebrovascular accident is an important cause of death in patients with chronic renal failure. METHODS This study evaluated the interference of low-dose urokinase in peritoneal dialysis solution on uremic serum superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin (ET) dynamics in patients with a cerebral infarction complicated by uremia. RESULTS Bo...

Impact of uremia, diabetes, and peritoneal dialysis itself on the pathogenesis of peritoneal sclerosis: a quantitative study of peritoneal membrane morphology.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Peritoneal interstitial fibrosis and hyalinizing vasculopathy were induced by peritoneal dialysis and other associated conditions (e.g., uremia). A quantitative method for peritoneal biopsy evaluation is required to investigate possible causative factors and severity of the peritoneal dialysis-related peritoneal alterations. DESIGN, SETTING, PARTICIPANTS, & MEASUREME...

Major and minor risk factors for cardiovascular disease in continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients.

Uremia in general and peritoneal dialysis in particular bring with them risk factors for the development of cardiovascular disease. These factors include multiple lipid abnormalities, hyperhomocysteinemia, abdominal obesity, chronic inflammation, hypoalbuminemia, oxidative stress, and AGE formation. When these are combined with conventional risk factors, one can appreciate why the incidence of ...

The effect of family-centered care on adherence to treatment in patients with type 2 diabetes

Background: Due to the prevalence of mortality due to complications of diabetes, this disease has focused on the health system. The family as the most basic pillar of society is responsible for the proper care of the patient with diabetes. Therefore, this study aimed to determine the effect of family-based care on adherence to treatment in type 2 diabetic patients. Materials & Methods: In quasi...
